Last night at an impromptu gathering of some of the founding WinePals Friday crowd, we met for dinner at Flemings, where the steaks are great, and the service even better.
2001 Neil Ellis Sauvignon Blanc Stellenbosch South Africa
Always one of my favorites when it comes to New World Sauvignon Blanc, the wine is made at Ellis' Jonkershoek Valley winery from some of the ripest fruit.
Rich and almost creamy, with flavors of grapefruit, passion fruit, peaches and snap peas. The deep and concentrated flavors make this wine a perennial winner.
2000 Talley Estate Chardonnay
Yum. This flinty, crisp, green apple tinged Central Coast Chardonnay never seems to disappoint anyone. Full of ripe young, fruit this white wine from one of the best small lot producers in California charms all that have it. Given its seven mile distance from the Pacific Ocean near Arroyo Grande, the grapes benefit from long hot days and cool nights. Great flavor and sensational depth makes this wine one of the best in California year after year.
1997 Saxenburg Private Collection Shiraz Stellenbosch South Africa
Wow. Jam packed, spicy, absolutely stunning. This is not Aussie Shiraz at all. It is not French Syrah, nor is it what one finds in California or even Washington. If Syrah was grown in Bordeaux, there is a very good chance this silky, smooth, jammy, rich, concentrated, very well balanced black and blueberry flavored wine, with coffee, hints of black pepper and licorice would find a similar wine.
1997 Neil Ellis Cabernet Sauvignon Jonkershoek Valley South Africa
Ellis is without a doubt, one of South Africa's finest winemakers. His red wines, especially those made from Cabernet, have to be some of the finest made in South Africa and easily rival those from California. Red plums, mint, cherry and cassis flavors, in this very round, ripe and already mature wine that is perfect with the New York Strip steak.
