Over the weekend...

1995 Henri Bougeois Grand Resereve Sancerre

Aged nicely, this 8 year old Sancerre is still vibrant in color and retains a touch of oak. Well balanced and loaded with ripe fruit, the acid has all but dropped out revealing copious layers of mango, pear, honeydew melon and a touch of sawdust, all wrapped up in a sweet Meyers lemon finish.

2002 Lawson's Dry Hills Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

I never tire of this wine. Perfectly made, jammy juicy, and opulent for a New World white. This may be more Sancerre than even the originals. Gooseberry, kiwi, peach, cantaloupe and Crenshaw melons , here is a wine to enjoy all by itself or with Sushi and Seaweed salad, if you can find any bottles left on the store shelves

1994 Domaine de Fontenielle Cotes du Luberon

I've been a fan of Luberon Valley reds since my fist sip of the 1985 Ch. De Mille. Over time wines from that picturesque region that straddles the Haut Provence and the Rhone have found there way to the USA, and when I find them I snatch a few up for long term enjoyment. The '94 Fontenelle, a winery I first started to drink with their '93 vintage, really showed its stuff as the ruby red colored wine with its cola and kirsch nose gave only a hint of what laid ahead for the palate. The fruit of this wine was nothing short of amazing. cola. Kirsch. Cassis. Black plums, blueberry, interlaced with Asian spice and oriental tea engulfed the palate with soft fruit and lingering spices.

2001 Huia Marlborough Pinot Noir

A slight disappointment given how tasty Huia whites are, the wine had some spritz to it and while it was fruity and Burgundy like in nose and palate weight, and had bing cherry and coffee flavors, it just finished short. Still the wine was an enjoyable wine to drink, with a mellow middle and decent balance.

1994 Vega Sauco Toro Crianza

All I can say is wow. This $4.99 wine that has been aging gracefully in my cellar for 8 years or so was nothing short of amazing. Loaded with ripe, dark plumy fruit the very smooth and elegant red was a charming and gulpable wine that was perfect all by itself. The flavors of red plums, cherry fruit and light tar makes this a very easy to drink wine.

Cheers,

Andy Abramson
