With a friend over a lengthy dinner at Arterra, I popped the corks on count them four fine examples of Southern French wines that makes one yearn to be sitting by the pool, with the grill blazing at sunset. As usual, Chef Carl Schroeder was on the mark, with his ever amazing repertoire of cooking and flavors being served up to welcome mouths.

2000 Chateau Commanderie de Peyrassol Cuvee Marie Estelle Rose

This lightly pink colored Rose from France's Cote de Provence is one of the better examples of Rose wine produced outside of Bandol. Offering up a vibrant pale pink tinge, the bouquet of fresh flowers is like a spring day. An aroma of lilacs, rose petals and fresh strawberries makes this wine a wonderful aperitif or starter wine, while at the same time having the strength and balance to stand up to all of the flavors of fresh fish and Sushi dishes.

1995 Domaine Sorin Cotes de Provence AOC Cuvee Tradition

This blend of Grenache 40%, Syrah 40%, Carignan 15%, Mourvedre 5% is vinified in rotary casks and aged in oak barrels for 9 months. While not as big, brawny or muscular as their Bandol release from the same vintage, that said it is a real delight right now, as its fruit forward, lush flavors of plums, blackberry, blueberry, bing cherry and cassis gave this wine an incredible mouth feel and flavor.

1999 Chateau La Canourge Cotes du Luberon

Poor mans Cote Rotie is how some like to describe this Syrah based wine producing region high up in the hills of Provence. Still a bit young, this wine, which is a blended release with some Grenache in it, remains an amazing sub $10.00 value these days. Loaded with big, brambly blueberry fruit flavors, with a hint of wild game and black plums, the deep, dark oozing fruit keeps you wanting to savor more.

1993 Chateaux de Pibernon Bandol

Yup, those folks who know Bandol, know that there is more to life in that part of France than Tempier. And when it comes to good wines, this is one producer, like Sorin, Pradeaux, etc., who without fail will tell you that letting these wines rest a while before opening them is always a good idea. What a sensational bottle of wine. Big, black color. Almost an opaque purple in shade of red. Massively dense bouquet of black plums, blackberry, wild raspberry, black cherry, cassis, mushrooms and a hint of black truffle. A dazzling length and a almost sinfully, chocoholic lovers finish...In a word...Yummy.....I can't wait for the next bottle, but that will be a 1990 for sure...
