I was rather hungry on Saturday so I popped over to Arterra for a seared yellowtail salad and their exquisite all beef sirloin burger, fries and all the trimmings. Not a bad, light dinner compared to the three courses the night before of sublime cooking including the Rack of Lamb.

1999 Chateau Sainte Roseline Cru Classe Cotes de Provence Blanc

From the hills near Les Arcs this viscous white blend of Rolle and Sémillon was a wine loaded with melons, giving off cantaloupe and honeydew from start to finish. Soft and lush, the wine is delightful with a finish of flavors of apricots and nectarines.

1992 Domaine de La Noblesse, Bandol

This is old school, old style Bandol. Hand carried back from a trip in 1994, I recall the woman in the shop taking me through the line of two or three reds, and then seeing her hand bottle two half bottles of their then way too young 1992's. This wine had that band aid and barn yard quality that Mourvedre seems to toss off. No matter, once you get past the bouquet the black plums, blackberry and raspberry taste assaults the palate before a lingering finish of blueberries comes through nicely.

1994 Mas de Gourgonnier Cuvee Tradition Rouge

A wonderful blend of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan, Mourvedre this wine sold originally for under $7.00 a bottle and has aged so well it never ceases to amaze me or those who taste it. Like so many wines from the hills outside of Les Baux the flavors are of black fruit, herbs and coffee. Layers of cherries, black tar, black raspberry and sweet plums, the wine is at peak and should be drunk over the next two years.

Cheers,

Andy Abramson
