The other night at Flemings Steak House and Wine along with some business colleagues, I pulled out a stunning 1992 Arns Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from the treasure chest. Now anyone who is serious about Napa Cabernet's knows that 1992 was a very, very good year, and truly a year that produced wines of a grand nature with an ability to age for a very, long time. This exquisite wine was an example of what happens when a perfectly aged wine that had been stored under optimum conditions is opened. Showing a deep, dark and robust ruby-purple color, the nose of the wine offered up some terrific touches of cedar, mocha, crème de cassis, kirsch and cherry flavors. The palate was equally impressive as the wine seemed to leap from the glass revealing layer upon layer of sweet cherry, black cherry, carob and cassis flavors. While I have a few more in the cellar, I don't know if I can keep my hands off of them for too long, as the wine was so darn good.
Last night at Roy's GM and Operating Partner turned me onto what has to be one of Roy's best ever house red wines. Named "Clos du Roy," as an ode to Roy himself, and made by Bonny Doon's eccentric winemaker Randall Graham, the very enticing blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan is a real head turner. Made in a very approachable, sip, drink, swill, guzzle style, this red wine is not "house" wine. It's a terrific southern French clone that one would expect to come from the Languedoc area near St. Chinian or Montpeyroux. Clearly a Bonny Doon spoof on their all Grenache Clos du Gilroy, the red wine is very easy to drink and offers up a robust assortment of flavors and charms that delight the palate. Blackberry, raspberry and plum flavors all engulf you, while a hint of white pepper, star anise and cassis provide the subtle nuances that make this wine a downright stunner. If you have a Roy's near you I encourage you to seek out this wine before they're all gone.
Cheers,
Andy Abramson
