Legrand Filles et Fils, 1 rue de la Banque, 75002 Paris is a wine shop, book store, tasting room and now restaurant. A total counterpoint to the convivial Juveniles, Legrand is a very upscale, tony spot in a very Anglo-Saxon style, similar to the wine bars of London. Each Tuesday at 8 PM they have weekly wine tastings with some of the best producers around. Their small, but articulately chosen wine list is full of magnificent selections, and of course there is the store that seemed to have just every wine I asked about, especially from France's newer, younger and rapidly moving upward group of artisan like producers.

There, at the suggestion of owner Gerard and shop manager Pascal, I discovered a wine imported to the USA worth seeking out. The 2002 Les Sorcieres from de Clos de Fees, and imported by Eric Solomon, is an elegant wine from the Roussillion Valley that may be better than the wines of Gauby. The wine is elegant, full of fruit, already approachable with flavors of black plums cassis and black cherry.

This followed a wonderfully fresh, 2002 Mas Jullien Rose, Coteaux du Languedoc. One of the darkest Languedoc Rose's I've tasted recently, the dark pink colored wine offered a spicy nose of wild berries, thyme and basil, while being flavored nicely with dried raspberries and cherries.

2000 Domain Bizot Bourgogne Blanc "les Violettes" is an absolutely stunning white wine from Burgundy. Almost no oak is evident, yet the wine is not Chablis. It is clearly Burgundy in flavor and is a real treat compared to those blowsy Australian and California Chardonnay's that are over oaked and have too much butter. Offering a hazelnut bouquet, light pear, golden apple flavors, the deeply mineral rich wine ends with a tart granny apple finish. This is a classy wine, with just a hint of saw grass in the finish. Yum...
