On New Year's Day, I stopped by Roy's to see what damage the New Year's Eve crowd had done....nothing visible other than a heavily dented wine cellar which means Adam and the team will need to restock...

So, I pulled along for dinner with a friend two winners:

2001 Lawson's Dry Hills New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc

The wine has lost the high tone, bristling fresh ripe grapefruit and the accompanying acidity. Instead you get gobs of gorgeous fresh gooseberry, lemon, lime and kiwi fruit, with a dash of grapefruit and pineapple in the finish.

Lawson's which is one of the smaller production wineries in New Zealand consistently makes some of the best Sauvignon Blancs around. While the distribution makes it a hard to find wine, it's one that is worthy of searching out if you like white wines which are anything but dull, bland or boring.

1993 Ravenswood Pickberry Vineyard Proprietary Red Wine

Sorry, it's not a Bordeaux wanna be. What this wine is instead is a full bodied, still tart cherried red wine made from Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Loaded with bright fruit, there is not a hint of Bordelaise style production in this full throttle, ripe fruit wine. Lots of black cherry, bing cherry, plum, blackberry and raspberry all melding together. The wine is far from tired, and likely can go another five to seven years, but is perfect now with spicy Asian fired foods or a good thick steak.

Cheers,

Andy Abramson
