A long time friend here in San Diego, Steve Condon, and I got together to celebrate his new role. Steve has moved from the tech world into consumer marketing and what should be a calmer and more rewarding experience. With that in mind, we each grabbed some wine and headed over to Arterra where the food always matches up to whatever is in your glass or vice versa.

2002 Mesh Riesling

Delightful is how I would describe this premier release from two winemakers, one of whom is the person behind Grosset. Lemon, some light vanilla extract, kiwi and orange peel. Lots of flavor with good, crisp acidity. Very easy to drink. The bottle didn't last long

2000 Starvedog Lane Shiraz

Steve found this during a recent trip to home, in Australia. This is no slouch and would sell for about $17 in the USA.

Nice and smooth, the wine is very forward, and while the bouquet has that typical Aussie varnish, the palate doesn't. Lots of berry fruit, the wine is plums and blackberry, with hints of carob and chocolate. Great extraction and color, I think this wine has another four to six years before one even sees a hint of color change. The finish is very elegant and this works perfect with a char grilled Rib Eye in a red wine reduction sauce with mushrooms.

1998 Majella Cabernet Sauvignon

Another winner, this big red has been filling a slot in the cellar since release and has aged perfectly. It's no longer big and forward, instead the primary and secondary fruit flavors have joined together showcasing a very elegant, long on the palate and very voluptuous style of wine. Loaded with cherry, cocoa and plum flavors, the wine is totally serious stuff and will age another ten or more years. This is another winner from the very good 98 vintage that makes me happy I have a cellar to age wines in.

Cheers,

Andy
